Forgive the attempt at a comedic answer but there is truth in it. My personal (and it is simply a personal preference) habit is to say something like, “I now baptize you in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit for the forgiveness of your sins.” That combines the wording from Matthew 28 and Acts 2.
I know people have very elaborate theories on this point. I am not one of them. A subject’s belief in Jesus as the Christ, the resurrected Son of God and submission to him as Lord are the important elements in being born again.
My personal wording is an attempt to give the full assurance of faith to someone that they are baptized according to the Scriptures (and that I am properly fulfilling my role). If you are interested, it might give me a good reason to write a bulletin article on the subject.
BTW, was there something in this sermon that brought this question to mind?
Do you believe in the baptize in the name of Jesus Christ or in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
Yes!
